Adult High School

Adult High School Overview

Wake Technical Community College offers competency-based courses for adults who wish to obtain a high school diploma. The Adult High School program provides academic courses at our learning center or through distance learning. Classes are ongoing; therefore, students may enroll throughout the year. This program is recommended for adults needing no more than five credits for completion. Students completing the program are awarded an Adult High School diploma. (Map)

Requirements

Students should be 18 years of age or older; however, some 16 and 17-year-old students may enter with special permission after a mandatory six-month waiting period. All applicants must score at a ninth-grade reading level or above on the reading placement test (TABE) administered by the college

Testing

If you have not been tested by our school within the last 90 days, you must take a TABE placement exam in reading and math. Testing occurs at regular AEC Orientations and Testing Sessions. Call 919- 334-1500 for scheduling information.

AHS Learning Center

The open-lab hours for Adult High School are Monday through Thursday, 8:30am to 9pm. The Adult Education Center is located at 1920 Capital Boulevard, close to downtown Raleigh. (Map)   The lab provides students with a quiet environment to study your course and get instructor assistance when needed.

Distance Learning

We now offer the option to study your high school courses from home. This program is for students who need to complete 3 or fewer courses to earn a high school diploma. Students in this program must have a personal computer and a high-speed Internet connection. Graduation Requirements

Students must earn 20 credits and pass the North Carolina Competency Tests in reading, math and writing to meet the requirements for graduation. Credits earned from a past high school experience may be transferred. Students must earn or transfer credits in the following subjects:

English 4 credits
Math (one must be Algebra I)
3 credits
Social Studies (World History, Economics/Government,
and U.S. History)
3 credits
Science (Physical, Biology)
3 credits
Health / P.E.
1 credits
Electives
6 credits
